Hello new readers! My name is Nicholas, but my nickname is Nick, and for this initial blog post I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. It’s a bit of a cliche to say that there’s not much to tell, so to avoid boring you to death, I will endeavor to complete the near insurmountable task of making my life sound interesting. Now, where to begin? To be perfectly candid, I am not a writer. I am actually studying accounting. I’ve always been a huge fan of boredom and headaches, and accounting is the perfect union of those passions. On a more serious note, I enjoy accounting because it requires an immense amount of critical thought and mathematical skill. The feeling of getting the correct answer is quite the thrill.

I was born and raised in Las Vegas, and I am in love with the community here. Some of my hobbies include reading, playing sports, pickleball, trivia, music, and lifting weights. If I am not at work or school, you’ll catch me doing one of these activities with my friends and family. Recently I’ve been really into playing pickleball, I am pretty decent. In pickleball they have ratings on a scale of 1-5 that determine your skill. I am somewhere above three, but below four. I am beginning to play in tournaments.

My dream career is working in law, I have already taken the LSAT and scored a 168! I am planning on applying upon graduation and using my degree in accounting to leverage a career in tax/ corporate law.

I also love to volunteer on campus, an issue that I am very passionate about is food insecurity. I know what its like to struggle to afford food and tuition, and how difficult it is to do assignments on an empty stomach.

Stepping into this journalism class, I want to look under the hood of the media machine.

I’ve been thinking about the areas of journalism that fascinate me most, and the big, messy questions I hope we can answer by the time finals roll around. The information I am most interested in is how institutional media platforms can keep up with individual influencers. I would also like to know about how these media oligarchies can regain trust with younger generations and provide improved accountability.

I am also eager to know about how the implementation of AI can change the journalism industry. Every industry is scrambling to figure out AI, but the stakes are uniquely high in journalism. I want to learn how modern newsrooms are setting guardrails. Can we use AI for data crunching and transcription without eroding the human empathy and skepticism that makes journalism valuable in the first place?

Finally, I am interested in how modern journalism can maintain its integral values while simultaneously competing for the attention spans of consumers who spend most of their time on media sites that utilize algorithms. I want to explore how journalists can successfully sneak complex, public-interest reporting into feeds that prioritize outrage and quick-hitting entertainment. I think these issues are important to discuss not only because they pertain to the future of the journalism industry, but also because they have significant effects on the well being of our society.
